About the Artist

Living at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, amid field and forest, Mary Margaret Pipkin captures the essence of the natural world in her monumental watercolors. They are about the clarity of winter light on bare branched trees, the emergence of spring, the luxurious blossoms of summer, and vibrant fall foliage.
Inspiration comes from walks in the woods to everyday moments in the garden. Experiencing the change of seasons, the cyclical nature of the flora and fauna, grounds her in place and time. It creates a sense of belonging. It is the place she has put down roots for 40 years.
Her work ranges from single flowers or leaves and carpets of leaves, to gardens and forests, meticulously rendered in the vibrancy of transparent watercolor. These large scale, intimate portraits provide a glimpse into the mystery and beauty of our natural world. She hopes to draw attention to the precious and fragile nature of our changing earth, under siege from development and climate change.
